A few years ago, when Americans began to hear about buckwheat pillows, they seemed to be a new fad. This was not, in fact, the case.
And no, this buckweat isn’t really for breakfast. lol. More on that later.
Asian cultures have known of the benefits of sleeping on buckwheat pillows for hundreds of years.
In the 1980s that western culture began to realize that these benefits were real, inexpensive and helped provide a great night’s sleep as well as to benefit them in other ways.
What are these buckwheat pillows made of? One may mistakenly think of buckwheat as a grain but it’s really a fruit- and related to a rhubarb family. The product used as filling for these pillows of buckwheat is actually the hulls or husks that protect the kernels.
The hulls are roasted which removes the dust from the fields and husking process before being placed into pillow slips. This means that the buckwheat filling used in these pillows is natural, renewable, and quite inexpensive while providing exceptional support for the human body.
The husks from buckwheat do not pack down as many pillow fillings do, allowing air circulation through the pillow during sleep to regulate the temperature naturally.
In fact, under body weight the buckwheat husks grip one another meaning that you experience stable, passive support and weight distribution.
What this all means to you is that you will experience firm but comfortable support from buckwheat filled pillows.
It also means that your pillow filled with buckwheat will last a long, long time because there are no fibers to pack down and become worn.
In fact, the husks inside the pillow will polish themselves over years of use and retain 93% of this volume after years of use.
A pillow filled with buckwheat can last as long as ten years where an ordinary bed pillow needs to be replaced each two to three years!
These pillows filled with husks from buckwheat are not only effective in holding the head and neck in the right position for sleeping, they can be chilled in the freezer for applying cold therapy to painful areas and heated in the microwave for applying heat therapy for muscle strains and other pains.
Rather then use a heating pad that can cause burns or burns from prolonged cold, the pillow filled with buckwheat will hold the heat or cold long enough to be effective but the temperature will naturally adjust to room temperature before any harm to your skin can occur.
People who are concerned with using natural products will love these pillows because of the natural buckwheat husks that replace the fibers which may not be natural inside traditional pillows. Those who have allergies will love the fact that the filling in these pillows is 99% dust free. Very few people may experience allergies to buckwheat, because it’s a rather rare allergy.
Some health care professionals have found that pillows filled with buckwheat help those suffering from migraine headaches, back injuries, neck problems and many other painful health problems relieve or reduce the patient’s pain level significantly.
Pillows can be found made specifically in the right size and shape for use covering the eyes, supporting the neck, shoulder as well as for use a regular bed pillows.
Caring for a buckwheat filled pillow is so simple and easy!
Just place the uncovered pillow slip in the sunshine for a few hours. Most pillows have removable covers which can be laundered or fit into your standard pillow case which, of course, can be removed for washing.
Let’s look at a few of the pillows filled with buckwheat that are available:
Makura (Japanese for pillow) Miracle Pillows are available that are sized to fit your standard pillow cases. These pillows often are labels “cervical pillows” because the ideal pillow supports the cervical vertebrae of the neck properly. The 26 X 20 inch dimensions are perfect for a standard bed pillow. If you prepare a smaller, more compact pillow, or perhaps want a travel pillow you can take with you, you’ll want to consider the 21 X 14 inch size. Each pillow filled with buckwheat comes with its own zippered pillow liner and its own pillow case. For smaller pillows, extra pillow cases can be ordered.
Some buckwheat filled pillows, often called rejuvenator pillows, have four snaps in that form a square in the center portion of the pillow. These snaps can be closed or opened to provide exactly the configuration that feels best for you. One snap, two snaps, three or all four can be left opened or closed, creating your very own “custom” pillow configuration.
The Horseshoe U-Shaped Pillow is another buckwheat filled product that many people enjoy for travel, relaxing or even for sleep. This U-shaped pillow supports the neck and head while in a sitting position. Even riding in the car as a passenger for long distances can be made more comfortable with this U-shaped design. These pillows often are seen with fuzzy covers that are removable for cleaning.
The comfort roll style buckwheat filled pillow is often used by Shiatsu massage professionals for the perfect support provided to the neck. These pillows are round and long, like a bedroll to fit underneath the neck. Perfect for lower back support or under knees, these pillows look like boudoir pillows and come in many different coverings.
The wrist pillow is a design used to support the wrist when typing on a computer. These long, thin pillows keep the wrist in the right position to help prevent carpal tunnel syndrome when used regularly.
No matter which pillow filled with buckwheat is right for you; you’ll soon learn you can’t live without them. They are so comfortable and last so long, you’ll want to buy at least one in each shape and size!
You may be able to find these pillows at your local retailers, but you’ll really get the best selection and prices when you shop for them online, where competition makes you the winner!

Bathroom vanity lights are often overlooked in a bathroom. Artificial light from vanity bathroom lights and general lighting is important during hours when natural light is not available. Without good lighting, the decor and the personality of your bathroom can not be developed properly. And since the day usually begins and ends with a trip to the bathroom, time spent there should be comforting, relaxing and easy to see when grooming.
Bathroom vanity lights typically include one light or perhaps two or more above the mirror. Or, there may be lights or sconces on each side of the mirror or medicine cabinet and one ceiling light or a row of recessed ceiling lights over the vanity, depending on the size of your vanity and mirror. Make sure your bathroom mirror is evenly illuminated and free of shadows since this is where applying makeup, shaving and other grooming activities will take place. If you have two bathroom vanities, each one should have the same bathroom vanity lights setup.
You should have both ambient lighting and task lighting in the bathroom. Here are lighting types for providing artificial bathroom light:
• Ambient Lighting – chandeliers, surface-mounted, bathroom vanity lights, wall sconces and recessed fixtures are types of general lighting that illuminate the overall bathroom area. This type of illumination allows you to move around and see safely in the room. These types of bathroom light fixtures should be controlled by dimmers where you can change the intensity of the light for a relaxing feel when you are soaking in the tub, for example. General ambient lighting gives your bathroom the most illumination towards the floor, but it will produce more glare than other types of bathroom light fixtures.
• Task Lighting – is a direct beam of light that illuminates a particular area with very work-specific tasks, not intended to light the entire room. Task lighting can be a beam of light directed towards the reading area while in the tub, while shaving, reading, exercising on the treadmill, applying makeup or putting in your contact lenses. It can be turned on only when you need it. Use wall sconces on both sides of the mirror or medicine cabinet as bathroom vanity lights so that you benefit from lighting from both sides.
• Accent Lighting – these types of bathroom light fixtures are intended to create a certain visual drama and atmosphere in the bathroom, and they provide focus to selected details of the room for a decorative touch. Consider using track lighting to spotlight decorative objects or to provide a relaxing environment that you will enjoy when soaking in the tub.
• Decorative Lighting – these are lighting fixtures that draw attention to themselves as objects and they are used to create an effect. Chandeliers, candles (traditional and electric), fireplace, candelabra and low voltage pendant fixtures are examples of decorative lighting.
Always choose light bulbs for bathroom vanity lights that provide light in the natural daylight spectrum. Bulbs that are mostly yellow or white will not show you how you will appear outside the bathroom, which makes applying makeup more difficult.
You should have many options for your bathroom vanity lights. Just as a luxurious soaking bath is a great way to begin or end the day, the lighting in your bathroom should provide you that warm, cozy feeling when you want. And when you need to see while grooming or shaving, vanity bathroom lights and lighting should make it easy to see.
If you find yourself unsure of how to proceed, consider consulting with a lighting designer to assist you in creating the best lighting for your home. Read and learn as much as you can about bathroom vanity lights and lighting in your home. Good lighting planning, design and implementation will provide you enjoyable, practical and dramatic effects for your bathroom and your home in general.

Follow Our Carpet Buying Guide And Keep Your Sanity!
Carpet buying has plenty of options and plenty of price ranges to offer. In fact it can be a bit overwhelming at first. If you follow our carpet buying guide you’ll have your home looking great in no time and still keep your sanity.
First you need to consider the style of rugs that are available and which room or rooms you want to put them in. Are your rooms traditional, modern, or are they rooms that are filled with antiques? If your room is filled with beautiful antiques you will want to consider an Oriental or Persian style rug. If your room is traditional or modern you may want to choose a braided style of rug.
One of main factors in choosing a rug are the colors in and around the area that the rug will be placed. Color directly affects the feeling in the room. The lighter the color the more spacious the room will feel. The darker the color the smaller and more intimate the room will feel.
Most carpets are more economical to maintain than smooth flooring is. Carpets also have some acoustical values because they absorb sounds and therefore improve the environment in your home or office. We live in an age of noise pollution caused by vehicles and heavy machinery an other equipment like phones, computers, faxes, air conditioning so carpet acoustic values can play an important role in you choice of floor coverings.
The price of a carpet is determined by the type of the pile which is related to the height, whether it is looped of cut, and the method of installation required. The higher the quality of carpet the better the energy benefits which provide insulation properties which make your room feel warm and cozy.
Unlike hardwood floors or linoleum which can be slippery, your carpets provides both anti slip properties and shock absorption. Low pile carpeting provides a good surface for wheel chairs. They are also a good choice for people using canes or crutches because they can be firmly planted on the carpets and they will provide a non slip surface.
The appearance, the colors and the aesthetics of the carpet is what will appeals to most people. There is a huge variety of colors, patterns, designs, and shapes to choose from. What style you choose will depend a great deal on the size of the room and the room’s decor. You may want the carpet to make a statement or simply blend into the room. That’s entirely up to you but remember nothing destroys the look of a room faster than a loud brash carpet that looks out of place.
The durability is very important for the look of the carpet. How much abuse will the carpet take before it begins to look worn and needs to be replaced. Will it retard stains, resist soiling ,and can it resist mildew. Are the colors fast and is the carpet flame resistant. Be sure to ask the sales person these questions when you are shopping for your new carpet.
Cost is also a consideration. Find out what your carpet is going to cost and be sure you get your quote in writing. Will you need under lay or under padding for the carpet? How well will it match up at a seam? If it won’t you will need to allow extra for the seams. Find out what will your installed cost will be including the sub floor preparation and installed the underpad. Find out if the installer will remove and take away the old carpet or linoleum when he is finished as well as clean up all the left over bits and pieces.
Learn about the extra treatments that are available for reducing moisture or alkalinity and find out their cost. Find out what the expenses of maintenance will be and what it would cost if your carpet was damaged and you needed repairs.
Some of the other things you should think about is how long the carpet you choose will be in style. Also remember that over a few years the die lots can change and you will not be able to match the colors of the old carpet to the new. So if you are thinking about doing other rooms later on with the same carpet it is better to do it all at once. Plus you can often get a better price this way.
Shop around at all the local dealers to see if their price is lower or higher and to compare services. You can also get a better feel for their customer service when you visit their location. Be aware if the price of the carpet is really low compared to the other dealer that all things may not be equal so dig deeper. The carpet may look the same but it’s quality may not be as good. You may find the carpet is the same but there are hidden extras such as travel time dumping fees and labor costs to remove the old carpet. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples.
Only deal with a carpet company that has been around for a while. Those truck loads of carpeting you see in the parking lots will surely be a disappointment to you in one way or another. Remember you will get what you pay for.

Scale floating in your hot tub can be a frustrating problem to solve. Scale builds in the pipes and then slowly breaks apart and comes out your jets. Symptoms are typically small and large chunks of square beige colored particles floating in your hot tub. Hot tub filters catch some of the scale but because much of it is large it doesn’t make it in the filters. The larger scale pieces sink back into the jets only to return when you next run the hot tub jets. Scale buildup is usually due to periods of high PH levels in your hot tub. Scale can also appear if you miss the once per week application of a scale defense spa chemical. Draining your hot tub may reduce the scale but usually hot tub owners are disappointed when the scale returns after they refill the hot tub.
How to get rid of scale floating in your hot tub?
The key to reducing the floating scale in your hot tub is to stop relying on the hot tub to filter the scale. It is also necessary to begin a regular application of a spa chemical scale protector or scale defense. This will prevent additional buildup of new scale while you get rid of the old scale floating in your hot tub. Now remember I said the scale sinks down to the floor and comes back out when you run the jets. This is to your advantage because you can make the scale come up to the top, and filter it out with a swimming pool net. Spend 30 minutes a week running the jets on high for 15 seconds. Then kill the jets and run the net across the top of the hot tub water. Shake out your net with each sweep. Then after a few passes run the jets and re sweep the scale out of your hot tub. You’ll notice an immediate improvement in the level of scale floating in the hot tub. The key here is to do this many times to catch the scale before it can fall back into your jets. Rinse out your filters more often as well so you can get the smaller scale particles out of your hot tub.
There is a spa chemical called System Flush that you use just before training your tub. I imagine it is a fairly harsh spa chemical that breaks scale from the inside of the spa jets. You then must flush out the chemical. This may take a few time draining and filling with rescreening in between. The key as well is to keep PH in the proper range so scale doesn’t continue to build.

Above all else, the furniture in the living-room should make it livable. It should be grouped so that it offers centers of interest, convenience and comfort. Look for upholstered seating with homespun-type fabric, or toss a pieced quilt over plain fabric or leather. An old rocker is a great addition.
By the time you are ready to choose the furniture for the living room, the walls and floor coverings should be in place so that the choice of furniture will be merely the selection of the best out of several possibilities. Of course, the quality, shape and color of furniture varies, and the quantity will as well.
Can one imagine a more livable living-room than one with a large, soft sofa in front of a fireplace, behind it a long table filled with books, while holding a lamp at either end. Or else, at the end of the sofa, a small table for the reading lamp and on either side a pair of comfortable chairs?
The main essentials are a comfortable sofa, a table large enough to hold books, magazines and lamps, and at least two comfortable, upholstered chairs and a smaller table.
While at the other end or side of the room, a pair of book-cases, cabinets or a credence. These balance the fireplace, since they are placed against the wall and have a corresponding shelf, cornice or mantel line.
In developing the original simple formula there may be added a chaise, a good-size table, another large chair, and another small table
Remember that it is always better to leave a space empty than to have it occupied by a badly placed piece of furniture. Good furniture needs space to be seen to its advantage.
If there is a large array of furniture in the living-room, keep the carpet, and furniture upholstery all to one tone.
Mantel accessories may be applied to the other shelves and the tables in the room. Keep them free from dust-collecting, trivial things, while creating a sense of order and cleanliness.
Balance is maintained by using objects in pairs a pair of vases, candlesticks, bowls, or jars. Placed at either end of the mantel, they should be higher than the intervening objects, to form a sweeping curve. Also they help to frame in the over-mantel picture or mirror.
In fitting furniture to its architectural background there are 3 things to consider

contour and proportion;
design and decorative detail;
color of wood.

The first two points are obviously necessary; it is in the last that the furnishing of many rooms fails. Oak and mahogany do not mix amicably; one does not set off the other because there is not sufficient contrast, nor are they closely enough allied to harmonize. On the other hand, black ebony and yellowish burr walnut, such as is used in inlaying seaweed pattern in oak, are examples of harmony gained.

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese philosophy. It is the study of living in harmony and prosperity with nature. Feng Shui means literally “wind water”. It is a form of geomancy, trying to understand the relationships between nature and ourselves so that we may live in harmony within our environment. It is based upon the simple thought that our lives are deeply affected by our physical and emotional environment.
One of our chief environments is our house, where we spend most of our time. Feng Shui has advice and solutions to offer, in order to let the “chi”, the energy, flow smoothly around the house. Curtains and windows are the most prominent features of our homes. Fabrics, color, material, window arrangement, yes, all these may affect your homes chi. Let’s see how to improve it.
· Pull the curtains back during daytime to allow sunlight to lighten your house and give the area positive energy.
· Keep your curtains closed at night. Don’t leave your windows exposed into night as it is considered to bring bad luck.
· Blinds and curtain rings should be of natural material. The most beneficial is wood. Avoid plastic by all means!
· Curtains should be large enough to cover the window and long enough to reach the floor.
· Curtains should have curves to them. When drawn together there should be enough fabric hanging to form pleats and folds.
· Make sure that curtains open and close easily.
· Curtains that hang limply each side of a window are considered bad Feng Shui.
· Keep your curtains and windows clean in order to allow the chi to come inside fresh and clean.
· Match your curtains with the seasons to freshen up yours and your chis’ mood. Use heavy fabrics for winter and lighter fabrics for summer. Utilize warm colours for wintertime and light happy colours for spring and summertime. Choose shades of green at spring, shades of red, orange and pink at summer, white, grey and metallic colours for autumn and shades of blue in winter.
· Windows are best when opening outwards. If a window opens inwards make sure it doesn’t face the West, which is the direction that signifies death or ending. In that case, block negative chi with an outward facing mirror or a plant with round leaves.
· Octagonal and arched windows are considered good Feng Shui.
You can also utilize colours in your curtains to change colours in each room of your house, adjusting it correctly to specific energies each room should have. Have matching pairs in your bedroom and colours that invite love such as pink or green. For the diving room use red to keep guests energized and excited. For kitchens and playrooms orange and yellow is refreshing and revitalizing. Green is a calming colour ideal for living rooms. Purple signifies richness and transformation, which makes it ideal for spiritual rooms.
Whether you believe in Feng Shui or not, the best way to decorate your house and choose your curtain fabrics and colours is your personal taste and instinct. Add some positive Chi energy and you have the perfect houss!

David G. Hallstrom176 2

The following article was written by David G. Hallstrom for and originally published by National Realtors Directory.com.
Bare Root Roses, what to look for when buying
The first thing to look for is the plant’s grade.
Nearly all bare root roses sold today are grown in the field and are approximetly two years old. They are sold in three main grades.
Grade 1 is the best and most expensive grade. In order to obtain this grade the plants are required to have at least three strong cains, two of which must be at least 18 inches in length for hybrid teas anf grandifloras. The canes should be at least 1/8 inch in diameter.
Grade 1 1/2 is the most popular grade due to it’s lesser price. In order to obtain this grade the plants are required to have at least two strong canes which must be at least 15 inches long for hybrid teas and grandifloras. The canes should be at least 1/8 inch in diameter.
Grade 2 is the least expensive grade. These plants are only required to have two canes 12 inches or longer. These plants can be a gamble as they may be stunted.
Note: Measurements are for plants when dug from the fields. Sometimes the plant sellers will shorten the length of the canes for easier handling. The number of canes remain the same and usually the thicker the diameter the better the plant.
There are three main s for buying roses.
Nurseries are normally more expensive but are usually the best places to buy your plants. Plants are normally kept in sawdust thereby allowing you to inspect the roots. Plants with badly damaged roots are less likely to do well and may not make it at all. Additionally, a nursery usually carries a large variety of new and old standards. Finally, a good nurseryperson can provide advice as to which plants do best in your area and climate.
Mail order suppliers are normally less expensive and usually have a greater variety of plants than your local nursery, however you can not inspect the plants before buying and they sometimes arrive damaged. Furthermore, although most mail order suppliers are reputable a few are disreputable and ship very poor quality plants. Additionally, it is hard and can be expensive to return plants that you are unhappy with.
Supermarkets are inexpensive but usually carry a limited variety of plants. Additionally the plants usually come with their roots wrapped in plastic, therefore you are unable to inspect the roots for damage. Plants can be treated roughly in supermarkets, not only by the people that stock them, but also by customers. Therefore, there is a much greater potential for damage.
Should you buy newly developed varieties or the old standards?
Which variety of plant you purchase depends on your taste and what is available for your climate.
There are hundreds of varieties of roses, however I prefer the older time proven standards. They may not come in as many color variations but they are reliable, still come in a large variety of colors and are usually more heavily scented (I like to smell the roses). My two favorites are both red. The Chrysler Imperial is a full well shaped velvety dark crimson red flower with a rich delightful fragrance which grows on a heavily flowering medium height bush. Mister Lincoln has long buds with full open dark rich red fragrant flowers with long stems and grows on a tall bush with dark glossy leaves.
Roses, if properly cared for, can last years. Therefore, in order to obtain the most enjoyment from your plants it is a good idea to do your research. Spend some time looking at types, colors, shapes and sizes. Check catalogues, the internet, check out friend’s gardens and if possible go to an arboretum or nursery. Look at and smell the roses before buying.
